Choose the repair supported by the fault

A warning message, delayed engagement or harsh shift can have mechanical, hydraulic, electrical or software causes. We identify where the fault is so the quotation addresses the problem behind the symptom.

Warnings or changed shifting after battery, software or transmission work can justify an electronic and control-system assessment. Fault data, adaptation values and a controlled road test help establish whether programming, calibration or further mechanical checks are appropriate.

A targeted repair can be suitable for a confirmed leak, sensor, wiring, mount, cooling, clutch or control fault when the wider assembly remains serviceable. The quotation names the affected component, related consumables and checks after repair.

Internal damage, widespread wear or an uneconomical repair can justify rebuilding or replacement. We compare whether the original unit is suitable for a rebuild or a compatible replacement provides better value.

Start with a free initial fault inspection. If the complaint needs dedicated testing or dismantling, we explain the purpose and price before you approve that stage. The aim is a repair recommendation you can understand, with the system with the fault and the available options made clear.

Used, rebuilt or new?

There is no universal best choice. Compare each option against the same evidence: transmission identity, condition, included components, installation, commissioning and written terms. A cheaper assembly can become an expensive job if essential parts or setup are missing.

CompareVerified usedRebuiltNew
Suitable starting pointCompatible donor available with acceptable identification and evidence.Existing unit or exchange core is suitable for the specified internal repair.Correct new assembly is available and its cost fits the ownership plan.
Internal conditionRetains much of the donor vehicle’s wear history; available inspection and test evidence matter.Dismantled and repaired to an agreed specification. Serviceable hard parts may remain.Greatest certainty about a new assembly’s parts history, subject to correct supply and installation.
What to confirmCode, documented donor mileage, source, included components and available test results.Parts replaced, measurements, clutch or converter work, mechatronics and final testing.Exact part number, supersession, included ancillaries, delivery and any core terms.
Practical trade-offCan reduce initial parts cost, with more uncertainty about previous use and remaining life.Balances known internal work and cost, but the builder and actual specification determine value.Usually the highest purchase cost; supply can be limited or slow for some applications.
Installation and coverConfirm removal, fitting, fluids, control work and responsibility if the supplied unit is faulty.Confirm setup, cooling work, final checks and the applicable written repair warranty.Confirm fitting, fluids, programming, adaptations and the applicable assembly and installation terms.

Availability, predictable operation and downtime may matter more than pursuing the lowest initial quotation. A well-rebuild or verified replacement can make sense when the rest of the vehicle is sound and you intend to keep it.

New assemblies may be unavailable or disproportionate to the vehicle’s value. Rebuilding the original matching unit can preserve compatibility, while a used unit may provide hard parts or a practical replacement if identification and condition evidence are strong.

Planned use, power modifications and long ownership can justify a more comprehensive specification. Modifications must be disclosed because they can affect suitability, calibration, thermal load and warranty terms.

Vehicle value alone should not make the decision. Review overall mechanical condition, service history, outstanding repairs, expected annual use, planned ownership and the cost of downtime. We can explain the options, but the final recommendation should follow diagnosis and actual availability for the identified transmission.

Establish the cause before major work

A complete transmission is one of the most expensive assemblies to replace. The visual and diagnostic evidence should therefore be strong enough to explain why a contained repair, rebuild, used assembly or new unit is being recommended.

The sequence changes with the symptom, but the objective stays consistent: confirm the fault, identify where the fault is and show why the recommended work is proportionate.

We record the complaint, recent repairs, warning messages and relevant service history. The initial condition matters: fluid level, visible leaks, battery voltage, tyre differences and existing damage can change the diagnostic direction.

Fault memory and live values are interpreted alongside a physical inspection. Where safe and appropriate, a road test helps reproduce the concern. A code identifies a circuit or condition; it does not automatically identify the part that should be replaced.

Describe the symptom you notice

The same complaint can have several causes. Note whether the vehicle is cold or warm, which gear is involved, whether the concern appears under light or heavy throttle, and whether recent battery, tyre, engine or transmission work preceded it.

What you noticeUseful contextRelevant checks
Delayed Drive or Reverse engagementCold or hot, duration of delay, warning message and whether engine speed risesFluid condition, pressure control, clutch or converter operation, adaptation data
Harsh, missed or flaring shiftGear change, throttle position, drive mode and repeatabilityFault memory, clutch values, valve body or mechatronics, internal wear
Judder during take-offTemperature, steering angle, gradient and light versus firm accelerationClutch operation, mounts, driveline, transfer-case or tyre-related influences
Transmission fluid leakColour, location, rate, recent service and any underbody impactPan, seals, cooler circuit, connectors and source confirmation before parts
Warning or restricted modeExact message, restart behavior and driving conditionsScan report, voltage history, network faults, temperature and hydraulic data
Whine, rumble or clunkVehicle speed, engine speed, gear, load and corneringTransmission versus differential, wheel bearing, mount or driveshaft isolation

A flashing warning, loss of drive, substantial leak, burning smell or severe impact should be treated cautiously. Continuing to drive can turn a contained fault into wider damage. If the car cannot move normally, call the workshop and describe what happened before deciding whether it should be driven or recovered.

PDK, Tiptronic and manual gearboxes

The transmission fitted to your Porsche changes the diagnosis, parts and quotation. We identify the system and generation before choosing a repair.

PDK dual-clutch transmission

PDK combines electronically controlled hydraulic operation with mechanical clutches and gearsets. A symptom can involve software, adaptation, sensors, wiring, hydraulic control, clutch wear, cooling, fluid condition or internal components. Replacing a complete PDK unit before separating these paths can create unnecessary cost.

Generation and transmission code matter. A repair plan should identify what has been tested, whether the mechatronic or clutch package is included, which fluids and filters are required, and what programming or adaptation follows the physical work.

Tiptronic automatic transmission

Tiptronic applications use a torque-converter automatic design. Diagnosis can involve converter lock-up behavior, valve-body control, solenoids, fluid condition, cooling, seals, speed sensors and internal clutch packs. A vibration that feels like transmission shudder can also originate elsewhere in the driveline.

When a rebuild is proposed, ask whether the torque converter is tested or renewed, how the valve body is handled, and whether cooler contamination will be addressed. These details materially change two quotations that may otherwise appear similar.

Manual gearbox and clutch

Manual Porsche models need a different repair decision. Difficult selection, noise or poor engagement may involve the clutch, dual-mass flywheel, hydraulics, cables or linkage, mounts, synchronisers, bearings or internal gears. A clutch problem is not automatically a gearbox failure.

Before approving gearbox removal, confirm whether clutch actuation and external linkage have been checked. If internal work is needed, parts availability and the condition of gears, shafts, bearings and casing determine whether repair, rebuild or replacement is sensible.

Check the connected driveline

Transmission type, code and configuration can change across generations, engines and drivetrains. We check the individual vehicle rather than treating every 911, Cayenne, Macan, Panamera, Boxster or Cayman as mechanically identical.

Rear- and mid-engine layouts, manual variants and different PDK generations require model-specific access, parts identification and road-test interpretation. A clutch concern, gear-selection issue or driveline noise must be isolated before condemning the transmission.

SUV symptoms can involve the automatic or PDK transmission, but transfer-case, differential, propshaft, tyre circumference and mount issues can create similar complaints. Correct system isolation prevents the wrong major assembly being ordered.

Panamera configurations span different drivetrains and complex control integration. Hybrid and electric vehicles require the correct safety, diagnostic and component-specific option; not every propulsion warning is a conventional gearbox failure.

For a Macan repair enquiry, we pay particular attention to whether the symptom belongs to the PDK, transfer case or another driveline component. Replacing the wrong major assembly can leave the complaint unchanged.

For Porsche 911 repairs and other rear- or mid-engine models, access and transmission configuration affect both diagnosis and cost. Electric-drive and hybrid concerns need their own system-specific assessment rather than a standard conventional gearbox quote.

What each repair option includes

A clear list of work tells you what will be repaired, retained or replaced. Two quotations can use the same label while covering materially different work.

Option 1

Targeted repair

Appropriate when diagnosis identifies a contained fault and the wider transmission remains serviceable: an external leak, wiring, sensor, selected hydraulic component, valve-body concern, mount or cooler-circuit problem. The quotation should name the confirmed fault and explain why complete overhaul is not justified.

Confirm whether access requires removal, which seals and fluids are renewed, and how contamination or overheating will be checked. For control or mechatronic work, programming, software, adaptations and follow-up testing must be stated.

Option 2

Internal rebuild

A rebuild starts with dismantling, cleaning, measurement and inspection. Failed parts and the wear items named in the specification are replaced before reassembly and testing. “Complete rebuild” does not mean every internal component becomes new; serviceable hard parts may remain.

Establish whether clutch packs, mechatronics, valve body, solenoids, pump, bearings, seals and torque converter, where fitted, are included, separately tested or excluded. Cooler and line cleaning after debris must also be addressed.

Option 3

Verified used assembly

A used transmission needs more identification than the donor model name. Matching can depend on exact code, production date, drivetrain, engine, control hardware and part-number supersessions. Confirm source, documented mileage, external condition, fluid evidence and available test results.

Clarify which accessories arrive with it. A donor may exclude converter, clutch, mechatronic, control module, wiring, cooler or mounts. The written warranty must explain both parts and labor responsibility if the supplied unit proves faulty.

Option 4

New replacement assembly

“New” should mean a genuinely new assembly from the stated supply channel, not a remanufactured exchange unit described loosely. Verify the part number, supersession, included items and any core deposit. Availability may be limited for older applications.

Installation should include correct fluids and filters, cooling checks, seals and hardware, control-unit work, coding, adaptations and post-installation tests. A new unit cannot correct an unresolved external cause such as voltage, wiring, cooling or drivetrain damage.

Before you approve

Your complete transmission quote

Porsche transmission costs vary too widely for a single honest “from” figure to describe diagnosis, a leak repair, mechatronic work, a clutch package, an internal rebuild and complete replacement. We provide a vehicle-specific quotation after the fault and transmission identity are checked.

Your model, model year, VIN and transmission code establish compatibility. For used or exchange units, part-number supersessions and included control or mechanical components must be clear.

Ask for a total tied to the confirmed vehicle and repair work. If dismantling is needed before internal damage can be established, the first approval should explain that stage and what happens when the findings are available.

Applicable repair work includes our 12-month repair warranty. The chosen parts or assembly and work covered are identified in the quote, with the policy linked for the full terms.

The written work order

Vehicle and transmission identified
Fault
The observed evidence, confirmed cause and any remaining investigation. A symptom description alone is not a parts order.
Parts
Repair components or assembly, source and condition. State new, rebuilt or used accurately, including accessories and any core requirement.
Fitting
Removal and installation labor, seals, hardware, fluids and filters. Identify cooling or related access work when it is needed.
Setup
Applicable coding, software, component matching and adaptations. Requirements depend on the fitted system and supplied parts.
Checks
Fluid level under the required conditions, leak checks, fault review and a controlled road test where appropriate.
Additional work
Clearly state separately quoted coolers, mounts, wiring, transport, taxes or further internal damage. Obtain approval before adding work.

Agreed total: a complete written price before the approved repair starts.

Fluid service and internal repair

Correct fluid protects a healthy transmission and gives useful inspection evidence. It cannot restore worn clutches, damaged gears, failing bearings or an established hydraulic or mechatronic fault.

Transmission fluid is a working hydraulic and lubricating medium. Its specification, level and condition matter, and some Porsche applications use more than one fluid circuit. Scheduled fluid and filter service supports normal operation and creates an opportunity to inspect the pan, magnets, seals and removed fluid.

It should follow the applicable vehicle and transmission requirements, not a universal interval copied across every model. Service records also show previous fluid specifications, intervals, software work, leaks and overheating events, evidence that helps later diagnosis.

A fluid change is not an automatic repair for slipping, loss of drive, damaged gears, worn clutches, bearing noise, a faulty mechatronic assembly or established pressure loss. A “flush” without understanding the system and fault is not a substitute for diagnosis. Significant debris or overheating needs assessment before anyone promises maintenance will restore operation.

After major work, report leaks, warnings or unexpected behavior promptly and follow written running-in or recheck advice. Keep the final specification with the vehicle history so future diagnosis can see exactly what “repaired,” “rebuilt,” “used” or “new” meant for this car.

If your visit is due maintenance, we price the correct fluid and filter arrangement for the transmission. If the car is slipping, losing drive or showing evidence of internal damage, an inspection must establish whether maintenance is still the appropriate job. These are different purchasing decisions.

Service history helps establish what has already been done. Tell us about previous fluid work, leaks, warning messages, adaptations and major parts replacement. If an earlier repair did not resolve the complaint, the invoice and findings can reduce duplicated investigation.

Recheck the repair before collection

The recommended work should state what was found, which option is recommended, what alternatives remain, and what is included. Disassembly may be required before the full internal condition can be known; if so, approval stages should be clear.

After repair, commissioning can include fluid-level verification at the correct conditions, clearing and rechecking faults, coding or adaptation where applicable, leak inspection and a controlled road test. Collection should include an explanation of the completed work and any follow-up advice relevant to the work.

After the agreed work, we explain the completed work and the checks relevant to the original complaint. A contained leak repair, a clutch job and a complete transmission replacement require different completion records. A brief statement that the gearbox was “done” is less useful than an accurate parts and work description.

Confirm the expected timing before approval. Parts sourcing, machining, internal findings and control work can affect collection. A simple external repair can be much quicker than rebuilding a damaged unit or waiting for an imported assembly. We keep the schedule tied to the agreed work.

Free pickup and delivery can be arranged through the workshop. If the car has lost drive, is leaking heavily or shows a serious warning, call to discuss assistance and whether it should be moved. You can begin with the symptom; exact vehicle details can follow when parts matching is needed.

Transmission repair questions

Is a rebuilt Porsche transmission the same as used?

No. A used unit normally retains its donor vehicle’s internal components and wear history. A rebuilt unit has been dismantled and repaired to a stated specification. The rebuild parts list, measurements, testing and warranty determine its quality.

Is a new transmission always the best option?

Not automatically. A new unit offers condition certainty, but price and availability may be disproportionate for some vehicles. A properly specified rebuild or verified used unit can be reasonable when diagnosis, compatibility and written terms support it.

Can a mechatronic fault require a complete PDK replacement?

Some failures can be addressed at component or mechatronic level; others involve clutch or internal gearbox damage. Codes and symptoms must be interpreted with physical and live-data checks before the correct work can be decided.

How long does Porsche transmission repair take?

Timing depends on diagnosis, disassembly findings, parts availability, machining or rebuild work, coding and testing. A contained external repair may be much quicker than an internal rebuild or imported replacement assembly. We confirm timing against the approved work.

Can you quote from a warning-light photo?

A photo is useful context but cannot establish the failed component or internal condition. Share it with the vehicle details, then arrange the appropriate diagnostic starting point before relying on a major-repair price.

Should I drive with a transmission warning?

If there is loss of drive, severe shifting, a major leak, burning smell or restricted mode, stop and seek advice. Continuing may increase damage. Call with the exact symptom so the workshop can advise whether driving or recovery is more appropriate.

Do replacement transmissions need programming?

Requirements vary by system and supplied assembly. Coding, software, component matching and adaptation may be required. The quotation should state the commissioning work included for your identified vehicle.

How much does Porsche transmission diagnosis cost?

An agreed transmission assessment is estimated at AED 350–650 beyond the free initial fault inspection. Deeper testing or dismantling is explained and quoted separately. The assessment establishes the next repair decision; it is not a complete repair price.
