Cayman engine repair and replacement costs

A repairable leak can cost far less than a replacement engine. For major internal damage, allow roughly AED 18,000–38,000+ for a rebuild, with the final cost depending on the engine and what can be reused.

Indicative planning estimates in AED, including 5% VAT. These are not confirmed fixed workshop prices.

Reconditioned exchange or new engineQuote by VINEngine specification, supplier availability, installation, exchange conditions and total confirmed individually.

What can cost extra?

Specialist cylinder machining, an unusable crankcase or crankshaft, turbochargers, injectors, catalytic converters and unrelated cooling repairs can take the total above these bands. A clutch, flywheel or PDK repair is separate. Exchange-engine core deposits, freight and additional parts must appear on the quotation.

Extended mechanical testing is estimated at AED 450–1,500 including VAT, beyond the free initial computer fault check. Agree the tests and any dismantling charge first; the table rows are alternatives, not charges to add together.

How long will the work take?

Allow around 1–3 working days for an accessible leak repair, 3–7 for more involved repairs and 2–4 weeks or longer for a rebuild. Replacement fitting may take around 3–7 working days once a suitable engine is available.

These are planning times, not booking promises. Parts sourcing, machining and additional findings can extend them. Send the model year and symptoms so we can confirm the next appointment and a realistic completion estimate.

Spend on the work your car needs

Keep a sound engine. Rebuild a viable one.

An engine warning, smoke or a misfire does not automatically mean the whole engine needs replacing.

Repair a specific fault
Suitable for a contained seal, cooling, ignition, fuelling or timing problem when the rest of the engine remains serviceable. This can preserve the original engine and reduce downtime.
Rebuild your engine
Consider this when internal wear is confirmed and the engine can be restored economically. The quotation should identify renewed pistons, rings, bearings, seals and any machining actually required.
Source a replacement
Worth comparing when major castings are damaged, previous repairs limit the rebuild or a suitable replacement offers a better overall result. Compare the installed total and warranty, not only the advertised engine price.

A used engine is not a rebuilt engine. Ask for its identity, available history and test results. For a reconditioned unit, confirm what was renewed, what was measured and whether your old engine must be returned.

The right work for your Cayman engine

Cayman engines share a mid-engine layout, but their parts and repair procedures differ. We check the model year, VIN and engine code before ordering major components.

987 Cayman and Cayman S
Early and later 987 engines have important design differences. Oil consumption, cylinder condition and any IMS-related concern must be assessed against the actual engine fitted. Do not assume a fault discussed for one 987 applies to every car.
981 Cayman, S, GTS and GT4
These naturally aspirated flat-six models need parts matched to their engine variant. Oil leaks, crankcase ventilation, cooling and ignition faults can produce symptoms that resemble internal wear. GT4 engine work requires its own quotation.
718 Cayman turbo models
The 2.0- and 2.5-litre four-cylinder engines add turbocharging and boost controls to the repair picture. Low power or smoke may involve charge-air plumbing, oil supply or the turbo system rather than the cylinder assembly alone.
718 GTS 4.0, GT4 and GT4 RS
These six-cylinder versions are distinct from the four-cylinder 718 models, and their engines are not interchangeable as a group. Performance-variant parts and replacement assemblies can exceed the general guide ranges.

From the first symptom to the finished repair

Fix the cause of the engine problem

Tell us when the problem happens: on a cold start, after warming up, under acceleration or after recent work. This helps us choose the checks that matter.

For oil loss or blue smoke, we assess leaks and crankcase ventilation before recommending internal work. A persistent misfire may need ignition, injector and cylinder-sealing checks. Overheating calls for cooling-system checks and an assessment of any resulting engine damage.

When internal damage is suspected, agreed tests may include oil-pressure measurement, compression and leak-down testing or a borescope inspection of the cylinders. These help separate bore wear, valve leakage and other causes before you commit to a rebuild.

After repair, the work includes relevant leak and fluid checks, monitoring operating temperature and reassessing the original complaint. A road test is carried out when the car is safe and the repair permits it.

Red oil-pressure warning, overheating or heavy knocking? Stop safely and switch off. Call for collection advice before restarting. Continuing to run a damaged engine can increase the repair cost.

A clear handover

Protect your engine after the repair

A rebuild needs a different handover from a simple reseal. Ask for the instructions that apply to the work on your Cayman.

For internal engine work, confirm any running-in restrictions, first oil-and-filter change and follow-up inspection in writing. Use the specified oil and coolant; a generic mileage rule or thicker oil is not a substitute for the builder’s instructions.

Keep the invoice and parts details with the service history. Monitor oil level as instructed and report fresh leaks, recurring smoke, unusual noise or warning lights promptly. If overheating caused the original damage, the cooling fault also needs resolving before normal use resumes.

Our 12-month repair warranty explains the coverage and conditions. Before choosing a used or exchange engine, confirm the specific supplied-unit and installation cover on your quotation.

A useful first message

Send the engine history before requesting a repair price

  • Your Cayman year, model, mileage and engine, if known.
  • The warning, noise, smoke, leak or running symptom.
  • Recent diagnostic, oil-analysis, borescope or repair records.

We will explain the checks needed before comparing repair, rebuild and replacement options.

Cayman engine repair questions

Is it cheaper to rebuild or replace a Cayman engine?

It depends on the damage and the available replacement. A viable original engine may be worth rebuilding; a damaged crankcase or extensive internal failure can make replacement more economical. Compare installed prices, the parts renewed, engine history and warranty before choosing.

Can bore scoring be repaired?

Sometimes. Confirmed cylinder damage may require specialist machining, suitable liners and matched pistons, or a replacement assembly. A borescope finding alone does not establish the complete repair price; condition and measurements determine what can be reused.

Does every Cayman need an IMS bearing replacement?

No. Engine designs differ between Cayman generations. An IMS-related recommendation must match the exact engine and its condition; it should not be added automatically to every Cayman repair or treated as a universal cause of engine noise.

Can a used engine be fitted without other changes?

Only after compatibility is checked. Engine code, specification, electronics, emissions equipment and existing accessories all matter. The quote should identify parts to transfer, seals and fluids to renew, and any configuration or adaptation required.

Will a rebuild increase power?

A standard rebuild aims to restore correct operation, not guarantee extra horsepower. Tell us about modifications or track use before quoting. Capacity changes and performance builds require separate planning, parts and pricing.

What should I send for an engine repair estimate?

Send the model year, mileage, symptoms and any dashboard messages. Mention overheating, oil consumption, recent repairs or modifications. A short video and service history can help; the VIN can be confirmed when matching parts. There is no need to dismantle anything before enquiring.
