The free initial fault inspection does not include instrument removal or specialist bench work. Uncommon classic parts, specialist shipping, severe water damage, multiple instrument faults, engine-management repairs and unrelated trim damage are excluded unless written into the quotation. Parts availability and the exact generation can extend the timeline.

Keep the original when practical

Repair or replacement?

A working rev counter should respond smoothly as engine speed changes. We quote the work that restores that function, whether it involves the existing instrument, a replacement assembly or its electrical connections.

Repair the original instrument

A serviceable circuit board, movement or connection can often be repaired without changing the whole assembly. Keeping the original is particularly useful on classic 911s where the dial, markings and appearance belong with the car.

We assess the fault and parts availability before committing to internal repair. Calibration follows repair where appropriate; it cannot compensate for the wrong instrument or an unstable RPM signal.

Fit a compatible replacement

Severe corrosion, physical damage or unavailable internal components can make replacement more sensible. The quotation identifies whether the offered instrument is new, rebuilt or used, together with fitting and any required setup.

Part number, model year, vehicle specification and electronic compatibility matter. A visually similar cluster is not automatically interchangeable. Mileage records and related display functions must remain accurate.

When the instrument is healthy

A damaged connection, poor supply or missing engine-speed information can stop a good tachometer working. In that case, repairing the electrical fault avoids buying an instrument that would leave the problem unresolved.

What is the RPM needle doing?

Stays at zero
A complete loss of indication may involve power, ground, the engine-speed signal, network communication or the instrument itself. Mention whether the engine starts and whether the speedometer and warning lamps still work.
Jumps or drops out
Intermittent movement can point to a poor connection, unstable supply, signal interruption or an internal instrument fault. Note whether heat, bumps or engine speed change the behaviour.
Reads steadily but incorrectly
An offset or inaccurate reading needs comparison with trustworthy live engine-speed data. That separates a display or calibration issue from an engine-signal problem.

The rev counter shows engine speed in RPM. If your problem is the road-speed reading instead, our 911 speedometer repair service covers that separate concern.

Example repair budgets

What could your repair include?

These are estimated scenarios, not completed customer jobs or fixed offers. Each range includes 5% VAT for the listed assumptions.

Estimated job 01

Intermittent RPM connection

Example: a 997 with a needle that drops after bumps, while scan data continues to show stable engine speed.

AED 1,200–1,800

  • Included: diagnosis, normal access and a localised connector or wiring repair.
  • Final check: idle and road-speed RPM response after repair.
  • Separate: cluster internal faults or wider harness damage.
Estimated job 02

Original tachometer repair

Example: a 964 or 993 with a stable incoming signal but a sticking or inaccurate movement.

AED 2,200–3,000

  • Included: removal, specialist repair allowance, refitting and comparison.
  • Priority: retain the original unit when it remains serviceable.
  • Separate: rare cosmetic restoration or unavailable internal parts.
Estimated job 03

Compatible replacement

Example: a modern 911 with an instrument assembly that is water-damaged or beyond economical repair.

AED 5,500–8,000

  • Included: compatible unit allowance, normal fitting and available setup.
  • Fitment: part number and vehicle specification before ordering.
  • Separate: additional modules, major water ingress or rare new-old-stock parts.

Which 911 instrument is fitted?

“911 tachometer” can mean a separate analogue instrument or part of a highly integrated cluster. The model year changes how the RPM signal arrives, how the unit is removed and what must be matched.

Classic and air-cooled 911
Originality and appearance often favour rebuilding the separate tachometer where practical. Wiring, grounds and the correct signal source still need checking first.
964 and 993
These retain the familiar instrument layout but age-related electronics, connections and earlier repairs can influence the result. Original-unit repair is often worth assessing.
996 and 997
The tachometer sits within a more integrated cluster. Diagnosis considers vehicle data, connector condition and whether other displays or warning functions are affected.
991 and 992
Later cars use increasingly networked electronics and displays. A fault can involve the cluster, communication, software or upstream data rather than a simple standalone gauge.

Lighting, software and display faults

The dial is dark
If RPM is correct but the dial is difficult to see at night, mention the illumination fault. Backlighting, brightness control and its supply need different attention from a failed movement.
The reading fails after starting
On later 911s, software and communication checks may be relevant. A manufacturer bulletin documents a software-related shaking or zero-reading tachometer on certain early 992 Carrera cars. Applicability must be checked against the vehicle and installed software.
The engine also runs poorly
Stalling, rough running or warning messages need attention alongside the gauge. The display may be reflecting an engine-management problem. Avoid driving a car that cuts out or develops serious warnings; call to arrange appropriate help.

A photo taken while parked can help distinguish the RPM display from the dashboard clock or Sport Chrono stopwatch. There is no need to remove the instrument before contacting us.

How the tachometer service works

  1. 1

    Send the details

WhatsApp the model year, a dashboard photo and whether the needle is dead, unstable or inaccurate. Include recent battery, engine or cluster work.

  2. 2

    Confirm the fault

We reproduce the symptom and compare the dashboard response with the available engine-speed information and electrical checks.

  3. 3

    Approve the repair

You receive a written quotation for an accessible repair, internal instrument work or a matched replacement. No replacement is assumed before testing.

  4. 4

    Repair and verify

After approved work, the instrument is checked through idle and changing engine speed. Related warning and display functions are reviewed before handover.

Porsche 911 tachometer FAQs

Why has my Porsche 911 tachometer stopped working?

A dead RPM display can be caused by lost power or ground, a damaged connector, an engine-speed signal fault, coding or communication problems, or a failure inside the tachometer or instrument cluster. The correct repair depends on the generation and whether other instruments are affected.

Can the original tachometer be repaired?

Often, yes. A repairable circuit, internal component, movement or connection fault may allow the original unit to stay with the car. That is especially valuable on classic 911s and cars where the instrument identity, appearance or recorded data matters. The unit must be inspected before repairability can be confirmed.

How much does Porsche 911 tachometer repair cost in Dubai?

Planning estimates are AED 300–500 for extended signal testing, AED 700–1,800 for an accessible wiring or connection repair, AED 1,000–3,000 for internal tachometer repair or calibration, and AED 5,000–8,000 for a compatible replacement. The ranges include 5% VAT under the stated assumptions but are not fixed quotations.

How long does the repair take?

Allow one to three hours for extended vehicle testing when needed. An accessible electrical repair may be completed the same day. Internal instrument work typically needs two to five working days, while uncommon replacement parts or specialist classic-instrument work can take longer.

Is it safe to drive with a failed tachometer?

If the engine runs normally and there are no warning messages, the car may still move, but you lose useful engine-speed information and the symptom may be part of a wider electrical or communication fault. Avoid hard driving and arrange an inspection. Stop if the engine runs poorly, warning lamps appear or several instruments fail together.

Does a jumping RPM needle always mean the tachometer is faulty?

No. An unstable needle can come from the instrument, its power supply, an intermittent connector, the engine-speed signal or a control-module communication problem. Comparing live engine speed with the displayed RPM prevents replacement of a good instrument.

Do you work on classic and modern 911 instruments?

The service covers classic air-cooled cars and later 964, 993, 996, 997, 991 and 992 generations, subject to parts and specialist availability. The testing changes with the instrument design, so send the model year and a dashboard photo before visiting.
