Handbrake cable replacement prices

These planning estimates cover mechanical handbrake work. A cable replacement includes fitting and routine adjustment; those items should not be added to the same job twice.

Planning estimates in AED including 5% VAT. Swipe the table on smaller screens to see all inclusions.

These are planning estimates, not fixed prices. The quotation states the selected cable, included labour, any related brake hardware and the final VAT-inclusive amount before work begins.

Cable specification, one-side or two-side work, seized connections and the condition of the parking-brake shoes affect the total. New discs, calipers, lever assemblies, electronic parking-brake components and unrelated repairs are not included. Free initial checking does not include extensive dismantling.

Three planning examples

What Boxster handbrake work may cost

These are estimated service examples, not completed customer repairs. They apply to mechanical-handbrake Boxsters; later electric parking-brake systems require a different quotation.

Estimated example 01

Adjustment on a serviceable system

Concern: the lever travel is excessive but the cables, shoes and hardware remain serviceable.

AED 158–315

  • Work: routine mechanical parking-brake adjustment and hold/release checks.
  • Separate if needed: dismantling, cable replacement, shoe or hardware repair.
Estimated example 02

One handbrake cable replacement

Concern: one cable is frayed, seized or has a damaged end fitting while the opposite side remains serviceable.

AED 1,365–3,360

  • Work: one compatible new cable, normal fitting, routine adjustment and final checks.
  • Separate if needed: second cable, shoes, springs, adjusters or seized rear-brake hardware.
Estimated example 03

Two-cable or rear-brake repair

Concern: both cables show deterioration or the parking-brake shoes and hardware also need attention.

Quote for the car

  • Work: exact cable quantity and shared access identified before approval.
  • Separate if needed: damaged discs, calipers or electric parking-brake components.
Match the system before the part

Which handbrake does yours have?

The 986 and 987 Boxster use a traditional cabin lever and mechanical cables. Later Boxsters have an electric parking-brake arrangement, so the same parts and prices do not apply.

For a mechanical system, the lever pulls the cables to operate the rear parking brakes. The cables, their outer sleeves and end fittings must suit the car and the side being repaired. A part advertised simply as “Boxster compatible” is not enough to confirm fitment.

Send the model year and VIN when available. We match the required cable before ordering and identify whether the quotation is for one side or both. Base and S models, production changes and previous repairs can affect the parts selection.

Have a switch instead of a lever? Tell us about any warning message or failure to release. Electronic actuator and control faults need a separate assessment, not a routine cable-adjustment booking.

New cable, proper fit

Replace the damaged cable

A frayed inner cable, broken end fitting or seized cable needs a sound replacement. Tightening the adjuster cannot repair damaged strands or a cable that no longer slides freely.

We check the accessible cable run, protective sheath, guides, retaining clips and attachment points. A split outer cover can admit moisture and contamination; damaged supports can leave the cable rubbing or sitting incorrectly. Those causes need attention when the new part is fitted.

Alternative-brand cable

One side or both
Based on the condition of both cables, with shared access labour considered in the combined quotation.

Used cables can hide internal corrosion or stiffness. We recommend a suitable new cable for a component relied on every time you park.

Two different problems

Holding and releasing both matter

A good repair restores secure parking without leaving the rear brakes dragging. Tell us which of these describes your Boxster.

The car will not hold

The lever may travel too far, feel loose or fail to secure the car. A broken cable is one possibility; worn shoes, a loose attachment or incorrect adjustment can produce similar symptoms.

If the cable and hardware are sound, adjustment may be enough. If the cable is damaged, replacement restores the connection that adjustment alone cannot provide.

The brake will not release

A stiff lever, reluctance to move, rear-wheel heat or a burning smell can indicate a dragging parking brake. A seized cable, sticking mechanism or damaged shoe hardware may be responsible.

Stop trying to drive through the resistance. Call the workshop before moving the vehicle so further brake damage and suitable collection can be discussed.

A dashboard warning does not identify a failed cable by itself. Mention any warning alongside what the lever and wheels are doing, especially if the problem started immediately after rear-brake work.

The cable is one part

Check the shoes and fittings

The mechanical parking brake uses its own friction shoes inside the rear brake-disc assembly. They are separate from the pads that clamp the disc when you press the foot brake.

A new cable will not restore reliable holding if the shoes are worn, contaminated or coming apart. Springs, adjusters and operating hardware also need to move correctly. We explain any additional parts needed before increasing the agreed bill.

  • Correct seating. Cable ends, guides and clips secured without kinks or contact with moving or hot parts.
  • Proper adjustment. The complete parking-brake mechanism set for the fitted system, not an arbitrary universal number of lever clicks.
  • Full release. Both rear brakes checked for release after the lever is lowered.

Scored or damaged rear discs may need separate work. See Boxster brake rotor replacement when the disc itself also needs attention.

Clear pricing before repair

PorscheGarage.ae is operated by AMF Auto Services LLC in Al Quoz 4, Dubai. The workshop explains the cable choice, additional parts and total cost before you approve the repair.

We are an independent workshop, not an authorised Porsche dealer. You can ask about parts availability before arranging your visit.

Before you contact us

Send the details that narrow the repair

  • Model year: confirms whether the Boxster uses a mechanical cable or electric parking brake.
  • What it does: loose lever, poor holding, sticking, dragging or failure to release.
  • Recent work: mention rear brake, shoe, disc or cable repairs.
  • Vehicle condition: tell us if a rear wheel is hot, locked or unsafe to move.
Plan your workshop visit

Time, testing and collection

A straightforward mechanical cable replacement generally takes around two to three working hours once the correct part is available. Corrosion, a second cable or related brake repairs can take longer.

Before you arrive

Tell us whether the car can be moved safely and whether the handbrake releases. We confirm the booking, likely parts lead time and collection arrangements. Fitting time is not a promise that the part is already in stock.

Share the model year, VIN if available, and any recent rear-brake repairs. No dismantling or technical diagnosis is needed before making an enquiry.

Before we return the car

  • The lever applies and releases normally.
  • The repaired parking brake holds during the workshop check.
  • Both rear wheels release without parking-brake drag.
  • The invoice identifies the fitted parts and agreed work.

Keep the repair record and contact the team if holding or release changes after collection.

Questions before booking

Handbrake cable FAQs

For a loose lever, sticking cable or a Boxster that will not stay parked, speak to the workshop about the appropriate repair.

Can you adjust the handbrake instead?

Yes, if the cable moves freely and the lever, shoes and fittings are serviceable. Adjustment cannot restore a frayed, broken or seized cable. The workshop checks the mechanism before recommending the smaller adjustment job or a replacement.

Do both cables need replacing?

Not automatically. The quote identifies the failed cable and the condition of the other side. Replacing both can be sensible when both show deterioration, but a sound second cable does not need to be replaced solely because one has failed.

How long does replacement take?

Allow around two to three working hours for a straightforward mechanical cable replacement. Corroded fittings, difficult access, parking-brake shoe repairs or a second cable can extend the job. Parts lead time and the workshop booking are separate from fitting time.

Will new brake pads fix it?

Not necessarily. On the mechanical Boxster parking-brake system, the parking-brake shoes and cable are separate from the pads used by the foot brake. Worn pads, damaged discs and handbrake faults need the appropriate individual repair.

Is this service suitable for a 981 or 718?

Tell us the model year and whether your car has a handbrake lever or an electric parking-brake switch. Later Boxsters use a different parking-brake arrangement. The mechanical-cable estimate does not cover electronic actuators, control units or electrical fault-finding.

Can I drive with a broken cable?

A failed parking brake can allow the car to roll when parked. If it will not hold reliably, will not release, or a rear wheel is dragging or overheating, call before moving the car. The team can discuss suitable collection; do not try to drive against an applied brake.

What warranty is available?

Eligible repairs using original parts may qualify for 12-month coverage under our published policy. The quotation identifies the supplied parts, work and applicable terms. View warranty policy.

What do you need for a quote?

Send the model year, whether the lever feels loose or stiff, and whether the car holds and releases normally. A VIN helps match parts. Mention recent rear-brake work or a parking-brake warning, and share a photo if it is easy to obtain without dismantling anything.
