A 718 four-cylinder, 718 six-cylinder, replacement engine, modified engine or car with previous internal work may fall outside these examples. We price the installed engine and actual findings rather than applying the cheapest card to every Boxster.
What the timing system does
The chain drive keeps the crankshaft and camshafts synchronized so the valves open at the correct point in each engine cycle. It is a system, not a single chain that can always be replaced in isolation.
Hydraulic tensioners control chain slack. Guide rails direct the chain and provide a wearing surface. Sprockets transmit movement, while camshaft adjusters change valve timing on engines that use them. Oil pressure and clean engine oil are important to the tensioners and adjusters.
A weak tensioner can allow startup rattle. Worn or damaged guide material can increase slack and contaminate the oil. A stretched chain or timing error may cause correlation faults, rough running or a no-start condition. Similar symptoms can also come from ignition, fuel, air leaks, low oil pressure or a failing adjuster, so parts should not be ordered from noise alone.
If the chain jumps far enough, piston-to-valve contact may occur on an interference engine. That can turn a timing repair into cylinder-head or full engine work. Stop using the car when severe rattle, a red oil-pressure warning, sudden misfiring or a no-start follows a mechanical timing noise.
Your Boxster engine matters
The 986, 987, 981 and 718 do not share one universal timing-chain kit or labour procedure. Model year and badge help, but the installed engine and its history decide the correct parts.
- 986 and early 987
- M96 and M97 flat-six engines use multiple chains, guides and tensioners. Timing-chain concerns are separate from the intermediate-shaft bearing, although both belong to the wider engine system.
- 987.2 and 981
- Later direct-injection flat-six engines use a different architecture and parts. Do not apply an early-engine chain kit, IMS claim or labour estimate to these cars.
- 718 Boxster
- Four-cylinder turbo and later six-cylinder versions require engine-specific parts and procedures. The Boxster badge alone is not enough to price the complete repair.
- Replacement or rebuilt engines
- The fitted engine number, previous work and installed components may matter more than the original registration specification. We check what is actually in the car.

Timing-chain warning signs
Rattle after a cold start
A brief metallic rattle can involve a tensioner, oil pressure, guide wear or another component. Note how long it lasts and whether it follows an overnight stop, but do not repeatedly restart the engine to reproduce it.
Camshaft correlation faults
Fault codes showing timing disagreement can result from mechanical timing, an adjuster, a sensor, wiring or oil-control problem. The code identifies where to test; it does not automatically authorize a complete chain replacement.
Rough running or misfires
Incorrect valve timing can affect idle and power, but ignition coils, plugs, fuel delivery and air leaks can produce the same complaint. The engine should be checked before timing parts are selected.
Plastic or metal in the oil
Guide debris or abnormal metallic material warrants prompt investigation. The oil filter and sump findings can help establish whether the concern is limited to the timing drive or part of wider engine wear.
No start after mechanical noise
Do not keep cranking the engine. A compression or timing problem may already exist, and repeated attempts can worsen internal contact. Arrange recovery and tell the workshop what happened immediately before it stopped.

Tensioner repair or complete timing work?
External tensioner or seal
Suitable only when testing supports a localized tensioner or sealing fault and the remaining chains, guides and timing components are serviceable. It is the lower-cost option, not a shortcut for an internally worn system.
Chains, rails and tensioners
Appropriate when wear, breakage or timing deviation involves multiple parts. The quotation identifies which chains, guides, tensioners, sprockets, adjusters, seals and single-use hardware are included.
Damage after timing loss
Required when compression tests, inspection or dismantling finds bent valves, piston contact or cylinder-head damage. Compare repair, rebuild and replacement costs before authorizing extensive work.
We do not recommend automatic chain replacement at one universal mileage. Condition, symptoms, fault data, engine family and service history matter. Correct oil servicing remains important, but fresh oil cannot repair a broken guide or restore incorrect mechanical timing.

Does every startup rattle mean the timing chain is worn?
No. A tensioner, oil pressure, guide wear, an accessory drive or another engine component can create a similar sound. The duration, engine temperature, oil condition, fault data and mechanical checks help identify the cause.
Can only the chain tensioner be replaced?
Yes, when the fault is genuinely limited to a serviceable external tensioner or related seal and the chains, guides and other timing components remain in acceptable condition. A limited repair is not appropriate when rails are damaged or timing has already moved.
Is the timing chain the same as the IMS bearing?
No. The timing chains synchronize the crankshaft and camshafts. The intermediate-shaft bearing is a separate component on relevant earlier engines. An IMS repair does not replace the timing chains, and timing-chain noise does not prove IMS bearing failure.
Can I drive with a rattling timing chain?
A mild unconfirmed noise still needs prompt assessment. Do not drive when the rattle is severe or continuous, the engine misfires heavily, a red oil-pressure warning appears, or the engine stopped after mechanical noise. Shut it down safely and arrange recovery.
Do Boxster timing chains have a fixed replacement interval?
There is no single replacement mileage that applies to every 986, 987, 981 and 718 engine. Follow the maintenance information for the exact vehicle and investigate symptoms promptly. Parts are replaced based on the fitted engine, condition and confirmed fault.
How long does a timing-chain repair take?
A limited external tensioner repair may take about one working day once parts are ready. Complete chain-and-guide work commonly needs around 4–7 working days. Cylinder-head or internal-engine repairs can require 8–15 working days or longer when machining or ordered parts are involved.
What parts are normally considered during a full repair?
Depending on the engine and findings, the quotation may include chains, guide rails, tensioners, seals, gaskets, required hardware, fluids and possibly sprockets or camshaft adjuster components. The exact list must match the installed engine; not every part is automatically required.
Will an oil change stop timing-chain rattle?
Correct oil and level can affect hydraulic tensioner operation, but an oil change cannot repair a broken guide, stretched chain, failed tensioner or incorrect timing. If fresh oil changes the sound, the underlying cause still needs assessment.
What should I send for a quote?
