Bulb or complete lamp?
The words “tail-light bulb” do not identify the part on every Boxster. Send the VIN, model year and a clear photo of the affected lamp or dashboard message.
- 986 and 987 Boxster
- Many rear-light functions use individually serviceable bulbs and bulb carriers, but the exact specification can change by model year, market and lamp design. The carrier and contacts still need checking if the new bulb does not work.
- 981 and 718 Boxster
- Later lamp designs can combine LED sections with separate serviceable functions. If the failed light is integrated, replacing a generic bulb will not solve it. Confirm the lamp part number and side before ordering.
- Modified rear lamps
- Aftermarket lamp assemblies, LED conversions and non-standard wiring need to be identified first. A warning message, poor fit or incorrect resistance may require correction rather than another bulb.

What the symptom tells us
A single dark lamp often points to a bulb, LED section or local connection. Both brake lights failing, several rear-light warnings or intermittent operation can indicate a shared electrical problem. That distinction prevents unnecessary lamp replacement.
- One function out: identify whether it is the tail, brake, indicator, reverse or fog-light function.
- Flickering or dim output: check the holder, earth connection, corrosion, heat marks and supply voltage.
- Bulb fails again: confirm the bulb type and investigate loose contacts, moisture or excess heat.
- Condensation or water: inspect the seal, lens and housing before fitting another electrical part.
- Several lights affected: test the connector, wiring and control inputs instead of changing parts by guesswork.
Do not continue driving at night with an essential rear light out. Other drivers may not see your braking or direction change clearly, and a small connection problem can worsen if heat or moisture damages the holder.

Protect the new part
Replacing a bulb is useful only when the circuit and lamp housing can support it. We look for blackened contacts, looseness, corrosion and visible water entry while access is open. A cracked lens or damaged seal needs a separate quotation because drying the lamp alone will not prevent the problem returning.
If the lamp works but remains dull, compare both sides in the same conditions. Lens ageing, internal contamination, voltage loss and mismatched bulbs can change brightness. We do not fit a higher-wattage bulb as a shortcut because extra heat can damage the carrier or lens.

Yes, when the affected function uses a serviceable bulb and the other components are sound. We check both rear lamps and advise if another bulb is weak or mismatched, but additional parts are only replaced with your approval.
Can condensation make the light fail?
Moisture can corrode contacts, damage a bulb holder and affect an LED lamp. The lens, seal and housing need inspection. Replacing the electrical part without addressing significant water entry can allow the failure to return.
Should I buy a bulb before the appointment?
Wait until the exact function and lamp design are confirmed. Boxster generations and optional lamps do not all use the same parts. If you already bought one, send a clear photo of the label and connector before booking.
