Budget before you book
Cayman timing-chain repair prices
A chain repair and a single tensioner repair are different jobs. These indicative ranges are budgeting estimates, not confirmed fixed workshop prices. We confirm the required parts and access before quoting your car.
| Work | Excluding VAT | Including 5% VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Chain, guides and tensioner work | 5,500–11,500 | 5,775–12,075 |
| Tensioner or accessible component repair | 1,800–4,200 | 1,890–4,410 |
| Timing work with a cam-adjuster repair | 8,500–16,000 | 8,925–16,800 |
| Extended timing-system testing | 350–750 | 367.50–787.50 |
Your initial fault check and initial computer check are free. Extended testing, mechanical access or dismantling carries a charge only after agreement. The written estimate explains whether that charge is included in the repair total.
What the repair estimate covers
The agreed replacement parts, access and fitting labour, necessary seals and single-use hardware, disturbed fluids and the checks needed after assembly. Ask for the actual chain, guide and tensioner quantities rather than assuming every engine uses one identical kit.
What can cost extra
Cam adjusters, oil-supply repairs, unrelated leaks, broken fixings and internal valve or piston damage are separate unless listed. Generation, engine access, genuine or alternative parts, contamination and availability change the total. Additional work needs your approval.
Three planning examples
What Cayman timing-chain work may cost
These are estimated service examples, not completed customer repairs. Each total includes 5% VAT for the work described; engine access, exact parts and any additional damage determine the written quotation.
Accessible tensioner repair
Symptom: startup rattle or timing noise traced to an accessible tensioner or related component without confirmed chain-guide damage.
AED 1,890–4,410
- Work: the confirmed component, normal access, fitting and relevant checks.
- Separate if needed: deeper mechanical testing, guides, chain replacement or cam-control work.
Chain, guides and tensioner repair
Symptom: chain or guide wear confirmed and the engine remains suitable for timing-system repair.
AED 5,775–12,075
- Work: agreed chain, guides and tensioner parts, access, fitting, necessary seals/hardware and post-repair checks.
- Separate if needed: broken fixings, oil-supply faults, valve damage or deeper internal repair.
Timing repair with cam-adjuster work
Symptom: timing-system wear plus a confirmed cam-adjuster or related control fault.
AED 8,925–16,800
- Work: the agreed timing components plus the confirmed cam-adjuster repair and final timing checks.
- Separate if needed: internal engine damage, machining or unrelated oil-pressure repairs.

Replace the right components
A repair that addresses the whole timing system
The chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts synchronised. Guides control its path and tensioners maintain tension. Replacing one worn part while leaving a damaged related component can leave the original problem unresolved.
- Chains, guides and tensioners. Assess related wear together and list the parts being renewed.
- Camshaft adjusters and oil control. Check whether the fault involves variable cam timing, lubrication or base mechanical timing.
- Seals and hardware. Include the gaskets, sealing work and replacement fasteners required by the specific procedure.
Genuine Porsche parts and suitable alternatives can be compared where available. The quotation names the proposed parts and warranty coverage. The lowest parts-only price is not the same as a complete fitted repair.
Your model matters
987, 981 and 718 need different repair planning
Send the VIN or registration details with your enquiry. The badge alone does not identify the timing components, access requirements or correct repair procedure.
987 Cayman
Early and later 987 engines differ. Model year, engine version and previous repairs help establish which chains, guides and tensioners are fitted. An older car’s rattle should not automatically be labelled an IMS-bearing or timing-chain failure.
981 Cayman
The flat-six engine and the affected side of the timing system determine the parts list. Base, S, GTS and GT4 specifications must be checked individually. A replacement chain alone will not resolve a separate cam-control or oil-pressure fault.
718 Cayman
The range includes turbocharged four-cylinder engines and six-cylinder variants such as the GTS 4.0 and GT4. Their components and repair requirements are not interchangeable. GT4 RS work also requires its exact engine specification.
From approval to collection
What happens during the repair

Agree access, parts and time first
We review the noise or warning, scan relevant faults and check the likely source before recommending major timing work. A tensioner, cam adjuster, accessory drive or oil-pressure problem can sound similar to chain wear. Further mechanical checks are agreed before dismantling.
Access to a mid-engine Cayman can account for a substantial part of the bill. Whether the engine needs to be lowered or removed depends on the engine and repair. We explain this in the estimate rather than promising one labour allowance for every Cayman.
Turnaround: substantial chain work requires several workshop days, rather than a while-you-wait visit. A limited accessible-component repair can take less time. Parts orders, deeper damage and the required cold-start retest can extend the job; your estimate confirms the expected collection date.
Check lubrication and the finished repair
Oil level, pressure concerns and filter condition matter because hydraulic tensioning and cam control depend on lubrication. Plastic guide fragments or metal in the filter can justify deeper investigation before new timing components are fitted.
After assembly, the repair needs mechanical timing verification, checks for leaks and abnormal noise, and review of relevant engine faults and operating data. Cold and warm running checks help confirm that the original complaint has been addressed. A road test follows when the car is safe to drive.
For ongoing maintenance, use the oil specification and schedule for your exact engine. Our Cayman oil-change service covers routine oil and filter care; persistent oil-pressure warnings need fault investigation.

Loud rattle, low oil pressure or sudden rough running?
Stop the engine and call about collection if a timing-related noise becomes persistent, the engine misfires severely, stalls or loses power, or an oil-pressure warning appears. Repeated restarts can worsen damage. If valve timing has moved, the repair may extend beyond the chain to the valves, pistons or other engine components.
A brief intermittent startup noise still deserves a prompt check. If wider damage is found, compare the timing repair with the options on our Cayman engine-repair page before committing to major work.
Clear advice at each decision
Know what you are approving
PorscheGarage.ae is an independent workshop service operated by AMF Auto Services LLC in Al Quoz 4, Dubai. You can discuss the required work, parts choice and total price before authorising the repair.
Pickup and delivery can be arranged for eligible bookings. Tell us whether the Cayman starts and rolls normally, plus your Dubai location, so the collection method and any applicable recovery charge can be confirmed.
Eligible repairs may receive 12-month coverage under our warranty policy, depending on the selected parts and repair. Check the written estimate for the coverage applying to your job.
Before you contact us
Send the details that help us plan the timing check
- Model year or VIN: helps identify the exact Cayman engine and timing layout.
- When the noise happens: cold start, warm restart, idle or under acceleration.
- Warning information: dashboard message or fault-code report if already available.
- Oil-service history: recent oil change, low-oil event or oil-pressure warning if relevant.
Do not repeatedly restart an engine with severe rattle, low oil pressure or sudden rough running just to make a recording.

Cayman timing-chain FAQs
Need advice for your exact engine? Call with the model year and warning message, or send the details on WhatsApp. We will explain the next step and what must be checked before a firm price is possible.
Does a Cayman have a timing chain or a timing belt?
Cayman engines use timing chains for valve timing. The external accessory or drive belt is a separate part, so a drive-belt replacement is not a timing-chain replacement. Confirm which item an estimate covers.
How much should I budget for timing-chain replacement?
Allow an indicative AED 5,500–11,500 before VAT, or AED 5,775–12,075 including 5% VAT, for chain, guide and tensioner work. This is not a fixed quotation. Engine access, parts and additional damage can move the total outside that range.
Can you replace only a faulty tensioner?
Sometimes. A targeted tensioner repair may be appropriate if the remaining components and mechanical timing are serviceable. If guides are damaged, chain wear is present or timing has moved, a tensioner alone may not be sufficient.
Does a startup rattle prove that the chain is stretched?
No. Oil-pressure delay, a tensioner, cam-control components or an accessory-drive fault can produce a similar complaint. When the noise occurs and the relevant engine data help identify the cause before expensive parts are ordered.
Is there a fixed replacement mileage for every Cayman?
No single mileage applies to every Cayman engine. Follow the maintenance information for your model and investigate abnormal noise or warnings promptly. Mileage alone is not enough to decide that the chain needs replacement.
Will a timing fault code tell you which part to replace?
A camshaft or crankshaft correlation code points to a timing relationship that needs checking. It does not prove chain failure. Mechanical timing, sensors, wiring, cam control and oil supply may need to be assessed as appropriate.
Can an oil change cure timing-chain wear?
Fresh oil cannot repair a worn chain or broken guide. Correct oil condition and specification support the timing system, but recurring rattles or oil-pressure warnings need their cause checked rather than repeated oil changes as a substitute for repair.
What should I send for an estimate?
Send the model year or VIN, mileage, warning message and when the noise happens. Add recent oil-service details and an existing recording if available; do not restart an engine with severe symptoms just to record it. Include your pickup area in Dubai.
