Boxster ECU repair prices
Repairing a suitable original engine computer can cost less than replacing it. These guide estimates distinguish repair, software work and a replacement supplied and fitted to the car.
| Service | Estimate before VAT | Included work |
|---|---|---|
| Original ECU bench repair | AED 1,500–3,500 | Removal, bench assessment, repair where viable, refitting and functional checks. |
| Cloning, programming or coding | AED 900–2,200 | Supported data transfer or software preparation and vehicle setup. Replacement module not included. |
| Refurbished or exchange ECU | AED 3,500–7,500 | Compatible replacement, fitting, required preparation or coding, and final checks. |
| New genuine ECU | AED 7,500–15,000+ | New unit, fitting, required programming and verification. Exact part availability affects cost. |
| Extended wiring or network testing | AED 750–1,800 | Agreed investigation of circuits, connectors, power supplies or communication faults. |
The free initial fault check does not include ECU removal, bench work or extended electrical testing. Keys, separate immobilizer modules, water-leak repairs and unrelated components are quoted separately. Software charges are included in replacement packages where stated, so they are not automatically added again.
For example, an agreed AED 2,000 repair is AED 2,100 including 5% VAT. These are guide prices, not fixed quotations. Send the model year and symptoms for a price matched to your Boxster.
Repairing your Boxster’s DME
DME is Porsche’s term for the engine-management computer, commonly called the ECU. It manages functions such as fuel injection and ignition, using information from sensors and other control units.
Where an internal fault is repairable, restoring the original unit can retain its vehicle-specific data and avoid buying another computer. The decision depends on the circuit board, connectors, housing and whether the stored data can still be read.
- Repairable electronics. A damaged circuit or connection may be repairable without replacing the complete unit.
- Software-related work. Coding or programming may be appropriate when the hardware is serviceable and the required function is supported.
- Severe damage. Extensive corrosion, burnt circuits or unrecoverable data may make a replacement the more practical choice.
We explain the viable option and price before proceeding. A warning light alone does not establish that the engine computer needs replacing.

A matching plug is not enough
A used ECU is not automatically ready to start your Boxster. Part number, hardware version, engine specification, software and immobilizer compatibility all affect whether it can be used.
- Original-unit repair
- Keeps the existing unit where its condition makes a reliable repair practical.
- Compatible donor or exchange
- Can reduce the parts bill, but its condition and supported cloning or adaptation must be checked first.
- New genuine replacement
- Selected for the vehicle, then programmed and configured as required before handover.
Cloning means transferring recoverable vehicle data to compatible hardware. Coding configures a module for the car; programming installs software. These are different operations, and not every unit supports every method.
If you already have a replacement ECU, send a clear photograph of its label before arranging installation. Keep the original module available even if the car no longer starts.
The right unit for your Boxster
The model name alone is not enough to select an engine computer. Tell us the year, engine and transmission; a VIN or module-label photograph can help confirm the exact application.
986 and 987 Boxster
Earlier cars can have a long repair history. Previous wiring changes, replaced keys, alarm work or a previously exchanged DME can affect the job. On a 987, identify the engine and generation carefully rather than buying a unit described only as “987 compatible”.
981 Boxster
Check the installed hardware and software alongside the car’s engine and transmission specification. A replacement should be selected for that combination, with the necessary vehicle setup included in the quotation.
718 Boxster, S and GTS
The 718 range includes different engines and calibrations. Base, S, GTS and Spyder applications must be checked individually. We confirm supported software work and parts availability for the actual vehicle before promising compatibility.
Tuned or modified cars
Tell us about any remap, engine conversion, exhaust changes or previous ECU replacement. Repair, software recovery and performance tuning are different requests. Agree the intended software configuration before anything is overwritten.
What else can cause the problem?
A no-start, stall or reduced-power warning can come from the ECU or from the components it relies on. We check the relevant connections so your repair addresses the actual fault.
A weak battery, interrupted power supply, poor earth connection or damaged wiring can prevent communication with the DME. Crankshaft signals, ignition coils, injectors and fuel supply can also produce running symptoms that appear to be an engine-computer problem.
Water damage needs particular care. Repairing electronics while leaving moisture entry or corroded connectors unresolved can allow the fault to return. Tell us if the trouble began after heavy rain, washing, battery replacement or another repair.
If the key is not recognised, the alarm behaves unexpectedly or the carpet is wet, the Boxster alarm control unit may need separate attention. The engine computer and the start-authorisation system are related but are not the same module.
Stalling in traffic, a flashing engine warning with rough running, smoke or burning smells? Stop safely and call for guidance before driving further. Tell us whether the engine cranks so we can discuss suitable collection arrangements.

What your repair includes
Your quotation identifies the selected module or repair, labour, software work and checks. Any additional fault discovered during the job is discussed before extra work is agreed.
Describe the problem
Send the model year, warning message and whether the car starts. Include recent battery, water or software history if relevant.
Agree the work
Review the repair or replacement option, included testing, VAT-inclusive total and expected completion time.
Repair and configure
The agreed work is completed, with data transfer, programming, coding or adaptations where the vehicle requires them.
Check the result
Starting, communication and the original symptom are rechecked. A road test is used where safe and relevant.
How long will it take? Initial checks and straightforward fixes may be completed within a working day, depending on the fault and workshop availability. Bench repairs, intermittent faults and ordered replacement units take longer. The team confirms the expected timing after assessment and updates you if parts or testing change it.
At handover, keep the invoice and repair description, including which module was fitted and any software work carried out. If another issue still needs attention, it should be explained separately rather than hidden by clearing fault codes.

Does a fault code prove my ECU is faulty?
No. A code describes a detected problem; it does not always identify the failed part. Power, earths, wiring, sensors and related modules can produce similar symptoms. The relevant checks establish whether ECU work is needed.
Can a water-damaged ECU be repaired?
Sometimes, depending on corrosion, circuit-board damage and whether data can be recovered. A badly damaged unit may need replacement. Moisture entry and damaged connectors also need attention to reduce the risk of a repeat failure.
Will a second-hand ECU start my Boxster?
Not necessarily. The replacement must be compatible with the car and its security system. It may need cloning, programming or adaptation. Contact us with its part number before buying or fitting a used unit.
Is ECU repair the same as a remap?
No. Repair restores a faulty unit or its normal operation. A performance remap changes calibration for a different objective. Tell us if your Boxster already has modified software so the intended configuration is agreed.
Can disconnecting the battery fix it?
A battery disconnect does not repair failed electronics, wiring or a component fault. It may change symptoms or reset some settings. Arrange a check instead of repeatedly disconnecting the battery to make a warning disappear.
Can I send only the ECU?
Contact the workshop first. A removed module may be suitable for bench assessment, but a complete repair can require the vehicle, its keys and checks of the wiring or start-authorisation system. Shipping and bench-only acceptance must be agreed before sending a unit.
Can you collect a Boxster that will not start?
Call with the location, model year and whether the engine cranks. The team will confirm collection arrangements and the appropriate transport. An enquiry does not automatically book a recovery vehicle.
What should I send for a quotation?
Start with the model year and a short description of the fault. A dashboard photo, existing scan report or ECU-label photo can help if already available. You do not need to dismantle the car or identify the failed part before contacting us.
